Cardinal Newman is hoping to play their fall sports season, and the school has begun taking steps to try and ensure that for all sports.
Newman is optimistic that there will be a season of some sorts in their regular schedule that is set, but is also looking ahead in case barriers come up. With public schools all around the area being prompted to either make their own decisions as districts, or other barriers could see Cardinal Newman, along with other private schools stuck in the middle if their opponents decide not to play.
The Roman Catholic school is exploring options for their student athletes, whatever those may be if worse comes to worse for the 2020-2021 school year only. The CIF, and NCS has not made any decisions as to cancelling or suspending fall sports, contrary to the CCAA’s decision a few weeks ago affecting Sonoma State. Newman was looking to exhaust all options so they could decide where to play if the chips fall in the wrong direction, and they still express a desire to play fall sports.
The NCS and CIF intend to wait until the latest moment to make an informed decision on the direction of fall sports. The Northern Section announced today that school districts will make the call to start summer workouts based on County directives. Wheatland has announced they will begin modified workouts on May 27. They released this statement in a Tweet today: “We want to reiterate that our coaching staff is committed to following a plan to be approved by the WUHSD Administration following county protocol to ensure the health and safety of our athletes and their families. All guidelines provided by our Bi-County Health Officer will be strictly followed.”

Coaches at Cardinal Newman have gained support to explore those options to give their student athletes the best chance to participate in their respective sports. As of now, all of the Cardinal Newman coaches, have been holding joint Zoom virtual workouts for players on school days from 7-8 a.m.
