August 2019 II… THE GOLF DAYS OF SUMMER-

Tee it up with SSU . . .

The Sonoma State Golf Alumni/Scholarship Tournament is scheduled for Sept. 9 at Sonoma Golf Club.

It’s a good cause and will be played at a very historic venue. Sonoma, which hosted the Senior PGA Championship for several years, is one of my favorite courses in the area.

According to head coach Val Verhunce, the event is geared towards fulfilling the commitment of $40,000 to subsidize SSU Student Athletes’ education.

“In addition,” notes Val, “your donations and sponsorship will go toward supporting our future leaders, on and off the golf course.

“Please help build the foundation of character for these young men and women,” he continues. “Your participation and contribution provides opportunities to student-athletes.

“Bring along and associate, and thanks for your time and contribution.”

Tournament registration is $300, and there is also need for tee sponsors ($125) and general sponsorships offered for $1,500, $2,500, $5,000 and $10,000. “Mulligans” are also available.

Registration is 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. and an awards ceremony to follow at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Entry fee includes green fees, range balls, cart, contests, awards and prizes, after-round appetizers and “special edition” SSU golf gear.

‘Save the date’ . . .

Tom Isaac is reminding golfers to “save the date” for the 11^th annual golf tournament to benefit the B’nai Israel Jewish Center.

The event is scheduled Sunday, Oct. 13, at Foxtail North GC in Rohnert Park.

The tournament will be followed by dinner, with Tom planning to get more details out in the near future. That includes the entry fee, with “your entire contribution going to the B’nai Israel Jewish Center.”

Registration will be 11:30 a.m. with a 12:30 p.m.  shotgun start to follow.

Glow Ball events scheduled . . .

Fairgrounds GC recently held its first Glow Ball event of 2019, which proved quite popular. There are three more on tap, all on Fridays: Aug. 30, Sept. 27 and Oct. 25.  Sign up in the Pro Shop, or call 284-3520.

Fairgrounds has been closed to accommodate horse racing at the Sonoma County Fair, but will re-open Tuesday morning, Aug. 13.

Oakmont clinics to resume

After a summer of junior camps, tournaments and golf lessons, Jessica Reese Quayle is starting up her popular clinics.

Clinics are scheduled on Wednesdays, 10 a.m. and cost is $35 per class.     Aug. 21, putting; Aug. 28, hybrids and irons; Sept. 4, chipping; Sept. 11, driver; Sept. 18, pitching; Sept. 25, sand.

PGA Junior golf . . .

“After a summer long wait, the two undefeated teams of Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club (4-0) and Windsor Golf Club (4-0) met on a warm afternoon for two-person scramble, Match Play Scoring.

“Golfers playing in this league are age 13 or younger. While the final score was 8 ½ – 3 ½ in favor of the young Santa Rosa team, each of the four matches featured holes won by both teams and was an extremely entertaining game for all.

“Captains and coaches of each team were planning to select golfers from their roster to form a Sonoma Division All-star team that was to represent our region at the sectional qualifier held at The Ridge Golf Course in Auburn Aug. 11. “Fountaingrove, Mayacama, Oakmont, and Petaluma were also going to have golfers selected for this team.

 News from Napa Valley . . .

  David Knox, PGA Director of Instruction at Napa GC-Kennedy Park has a lot planned and has shared some of those activities.

Ladies on Course with David: Wednesday evenings, 5:45-7 p.m., Sept. 11 through Oct. 2. “An informal group of women of any skill level seeking to get some quality outdoor golf time on the course, while meeting new friends.” $40 per class. Call David at 916-533-4108.

Cobra Demo Day: Scheduled Sunday, Sept. 28, noon-4 p.m.

Napa Junior Golf League: A month-long commitment for participants, which allows junior golfers to compete in five Sunday afternoon league matches in a comfortable, two-person scramble format. Additionally, league participants will learn directly from David, a PGA Professional, twice weekly (Monday and Wednesday) in 1-hour practices (4:30-5:30 p.m.).

Golf equipment not required, but encouraged if a junior has their own clubs.  League open to juniors 7-15. League has room for up to 16 players.

Orientation meeting for parents and players Sunday, Sept. 15, 2-3 p.m. Cost of Junior League is $270. Contact David at Davidknox@pga.com

Napa GC Junior Minis: A 4-week program for participants, “which allows your child to experience an introduction to golf” directly from Knox weekly on Sunday mornings in age-appropriate groups.

Golf equipment not required but suggest if child already has clubs . . . equipment will be provided to kids without clubs   Two different classes, sorted by age group, one for ages 4-5, the other for ages 6-7.  Program has room for up to 20 participants in each age-specific program.

Ages 4-5 meet from 9-9:40 a.m.; ages 6-7 meet from 10-10:40 a.m. Cost is $40 for the 4-week class. Register your child at www.playnapa.com/lessons/instructional-offerings
